Creating Quality Links

How to generate high quality links

Having high quality, incoming links to your website is essential because as well as this generating visitors by itself, all search engines value incoming links to a site and use this as one of their key determinants in how highly a site appears in their search results.

Over 50% of users now use Google for their search engine. Why? Because they have the most advanced methods for determining the value of a website, meaning you're likely to find relevant results with Google, compared to other search engines.

One way Google maintains this advantage is by the use a page ranking system that shows how many other sites link to yours. The higher the Page Rank, the higher the site will appear with search engines (see Google Page Rank for more info) ... however, not all links are equal!

Links to Avoid

Let's start by looking at what you absolutely don't want. There are certain types of link that could get you penalised from Google, for example:

  • Links from porn, gambling or other adult content sites.
  • Links on pages that contain several other links that point to adult content sites.
  • Anything Google perceives to be articifial site promotion to unfairly adjust search results, e.g.:
    • Copying your site 10 times and having each site link to each of the other sites.
    • Having many links using exactly the same words to link to your site.
    • Having many new links appear in the same day (unless this happens every day!)
    • Putting links where they can't be seen (by having the writing very small, or the same colour as the background, etc.)

Links that are valued by Google

Generating linksSo, what links will help your website to appear on the first page with Google?

Ideal links are unrequested ones, that someone has put on their site to yours, because your site has high-quality content. In order to gain spontaneous, unrequested links, you can provide free useful information on your website, offer a service that also helps other businesses (e.g. if you run a taxi company, you might get local businesses, such as hotels or B&B's linking to you), etc.

Even with a great website, this obviously takes time to achieve, so how can you generate links in the meantime?

1 Website Designer has agreements with several of our clients, so that we can add reciprocal links to their existing sites. We also generate links by emailing related, but not competing businesses to see if they want to do link exchanges and by a few other methods. Basically, we build up your links a few at a time, in a very natural way to ensure that Google values the links to your website. We only count links that we know are high-quality, therefore all the links we generate will fit all the following criteria:

  • Appear on a website with a home page PageRank of 3 or more on a page with a direct link to it from the home page, or on a page with PageRank of 2 or more.
  • Be on a page that is easy to navigate to from elsewhere on the site.
  • Not be on a page with adult content or with any outgoing links to adult content sites.
  • Not be in a Directory (while Directories can be useful, we do not count them towards our link count).
  • Be on a page with a maximum of 100 links (Google considers less than 100 links to be 'reasonable').
  • Have relevant, varied, linking text.

By creating your links in this natural fashion, ensuring that all of them are high quality, this will help your website to appear on the first page with Google for relevant searches - as well as with other search engines.
