At the planning stage we will have made notes of several keywords to include on your site - what your business focus is, what you think clients are likely to search for, geographical locations, etc. We may also suggest extra keywords and will also look at the text used on each page and use different keywords for different pages - so the most relevant pages appears for the most relevant search. We then check which search terms are most commonly used on search engines and prioritise those (though we'll include the less common ones too). See Writing good meta tags for more information on how we incorporate these keywords into the coding of a web page - though we also include keywords in the text of the page itself, titles, etc. You may also want to try this free Keyword Suggestion Tool.
